Post-Tin-Mining Agricultural Soil Regeneration Using Local Resources, Reduces Drought Stress and Increases Crop Production on Bangka Island, Indonesia

چکیده

Mining severely affects ecosystems and threatens local food security. Remediation practices, however, are a viable way of reducing the negative impacts on post-mining lands. In this study we aim to improve crop yields drought resistance post-tin-mining site located in Bangka Island, Indonesia, with locally available resources. Plots five different soil amendments: (1) dolomite; (2) compost; (3) charcoal; combinations (4) charcoal + (5) sawdust; control were established. An intercropping system cassava centrosema was employed, determined. Drought evaluated by carbon isotope discrimination (∆13C) from parts centrosema’s shoot. Soil physicochemical properties determined at harvesting time. amendments significantly improved yields. particular, compost combined (charcoal compost) treatments enhanced (1.18 1.99 kg·plot−1, respectively) related higher nutrient availability. Similarly, compost, charcoal, showed positive effects yield (0.15–0.16 kg·plant−1) treatment (∆13C= 21.48‰). Increased water-holding capacity (WHC) reduced water deficiency boosted when treated dual compost). Charcoal, their combination turned out be most sustainable degraded tropical soils.

Soil regeneration increases crop nutrients, antioxidants and adaptive responses

Some researchers have sounded an alarm concerning declining nutritional contents of crop products. They have suggested that nutrient and vitamin decline coincide with the growth of centralized industrialized farming methods and these are leading to the growing nutritional threat of crop, human and animal deficiencies. According to Tan et al.1 nutrient depletion is a widespread global phenomenon...

Baseline reef health surveys at Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) reveal new threats

Worldwide coral reef decline appears to be accompanied by an increase in the spread of hard coral diseases. However, whether this is the result of increased direct and indirect human disturbances and/or an increase in natural stresses remains poorly understood. The provision of baseline surveys for monitoring coral health status lays the foundations to assess the effects of any such anthropogen...

On crop production and the balance of available resources

One of the main insights achieved in the early days of agricultural science is that each environment has a specific balance of resources, which is available to the crop. This balance determines crop production, the effect of resource addition and the effect of agronomic operations. However, attempts to quantify this balance are scarce. It is normally taken into account indirectly by a general d...

Soil Amendments for Agricultural Production

The word organic, applied to fertilizers, indicates that the nutrients are derived from the remains or by‐products of a once‐living organism. Farmers are continually searching for alternatives to synthetic inorganic fertilizers to alleviate the escalating production costs associated with the increasing costs of energy and fertilizers and the problems of soil and surface water deterioration asso...
